I've seen at least two or three people (not necessarily from here)saying that Samantha was snobby or that her family was snobby because they are rich. There is nothing in the books to suggest Samantha was anything but kind and loving to others. Being rich does not mean being mean. There is nothing wrong with being rich!!!!! There is nothing wrong with being priveledged or having more than others. It's not like it is a bad characteristic or like it defines who your are or what your personality is. It's not like Samantha and her family didn't use her wealth to help others, either.

I just don't get it. It makes me soooooooooooooo maaaaaaaaaaaddddd!!!!!

Sigh...done ranting now... Thanks for listening

I love Samantha. But it could be that I have always had a soft spot for orphans. *grins* Mary Lenox from the Secret Garden, Little Orphan Annie, and Sara Crew.

Maybe they're jealous. I agree with you and got the impression that Samantha is overly kind.

I love Samantha. And have read all of her books. She is a kind girl. I guess this all depends on how a person views a particular character.

...I haven't seen or heard anything of the sort. I doubt anyone here hates Samantha because her family was rich. Anyone who's read the books can see that Samantha was a very very unselfish girl, as was her whole family. I'm going to guess that whoever you've heard saying something as strange as that has never read the books.

There is, of course, that pre-conceived notion that "little rich girls" are total brats. In fact, I'm really glad AG made Samantha a little rich girl who was the total opposite. We all tend to get jealous of something we don't have, and I think the Samantha books make a very good point of saying that not all little rich girls (and even though Samantha is a bit spoiled), are snobby brats.

I have to wonder if the people who bugged you by saying it dislike Samantha because they have another favorite AG? If Samantha wasn't one of my favorites, I'd be very jealous of how popular she is and how much *stuff* she gets when some of the others get next to nothing. I can see how someone who was jealous of Samantha's collection could be mad enough to say something like that.

I really don't see how a person could read the Samantha books and think she was a snob.

I've heard of no one disparaging the DOLL itself, just the character of Samantha. In fact, the people I'm talking about actually have Samantha and have made up stories about her or her family being snobby and/or spoiled. It just gets me annoyed...
But I'm glad to see there are so many Samantha supporters out there!!!

I don't know of people disparaging Sam as much as not being able to identify with her character... though I guess you're right, I think I have heard her be called snotty before.

I think it's harder to write a sympathetic character who comes from money, though I heartily agree with you that it isn't right to judge a privaleged person harshly if they have a good character. You just have to look a little deeper, I suppose, with fictional people to see a good nature.

Overall I believe Sam to be the most beloved historical AG... even if some disparage her, many more are in her faithful legion!

I don't dislike Samantha at all-the only remarks I have made in the past is that I don't think she is as unique or different as the other dolls are because there are already alot of victorian era dolls and stuff out there. Which in my mind makes her and her collection a little less intresting. Its not very often that you see a colonial or civil war doll or doll stuff on the market or in the hands of a little girl and when you do its sort of like "wow!" It amazes me how much the victorian era is used! Its probably because alot of the lacey, frills, and extra pretties appeal to the majority of little girls and most importantly their moms.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Samantha is my favorite historical and I just cringe whenever I hear someone call her prissy. Girly, yes; prissy, never!

I think these comments are less directed at Samantha as a character, and more towards Sam as a doll, with her profusion of pink and lace and ultra-feminine accessories. I like the girly stuff, and I like the color pink, but some people really don't. Although I everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, I too think "prissy" is often misued when speaking of poor Samantha.

I agree with ksami-when most people speak about Samantha-like me- they are speaking about the doll and her collection, not her as a character. Some people just tire of extra frilly, girly, pinky, lacey stuff, and thats why thay turn to the other dolls and their collections who are a little less frilly. Like myself, some people are intrested in a doll and collection a little more, well realistic and true to the common everyday life the majority of girls had, because the margin of people who lived like Samantha did were VERY few and far between.
